The ALPHA Podcast Launches with Purpose at North Greenville

The first episode of The ALPHA Podcast sets the tone for what North Greenville football is all about: culture, competition, growth, and a commitment to building something bigger than the game itself.

Hosted by North Greenville head football coach Nate Garner and Jim Padgett, who oversees marketing and social media for the program, the pilot episode serves as an introduction to the podcast, the people behind it, and the foundation of the football program moving forward.

From the start, the message is clear: this podcast is about more than football. It is about spotlighting North Greenville University, sharing the stories inside the program, and creating a platform that gives players, coaches, and the university community a stronger voice.

What ALPHA Means

At the center of the episode is the meaning behind the word ALPHA, which has become the identity of the program.

For Coach Garner, ALPHA stands for:

Aggressive. Loyal. Prepared. Humble. Armored.

Those five words are more than a slogan. They shape the way the team is expected to live, work, and compete every day.

Being aggressive means attacking every opportunity with purpose and effort. Being loyal means telling the truth, standing by teammates, and building real trust between players and coaches. Being prepared means showing up ready, knowing the assignment, and putting in the work before game day ever arrives. Being humble means keeping a next-play mentality, refusing to live in the past, and staying grounded whether things are going well or not. And being armored speaks to both spiritual and physical strength—being rooted in faith while also developing the body through hard work in the weight room.

For Garner, that mindset came together as he stepped into his first head coaching role and began asking a big question: Who do I want this team to be?

The answer became ALPHA.

Building a Culture, Not Just a Catchphrase

One of the most honest moments in the episode comes when Coach Garner reflects on his first season leading the program.

Despite an impressive year that included an undefeated conference run and a conference championship, he admits that fully installing the ALPHA mindset was harder than he expected. In his words, the first year sometimes felt like survival. As a first-time head coach, he was learning the administrative side of the job in real time while also trying to lead a team and win games.

That honesty matters.

A lot of people see the success on the field and assume everything clicked immediately. Garner pulls back the curtain and makes it clear that leadership is a process. Winning games is one thing. Building lasting culture is another. That is a major reason the ALPHA identity is receiving an even stronger emphasis now.

It is not just something printed on a wall. It is what North Greenville football wants to become in action, every day.

Coach Garner’s Journey to North Greenville

The pilot episode also gives listeners a deeper look at how Coach Garner arrived at North Greenville.

His path includes playing at the University of Arkansas, spending time with the Miami Dolphins, coaching at the high school, college, and NFL levels, and eventually joining the staff at Limestone University. When the head coaching position at North Greenville opened, the opportunity came at the right time.

After being hired, another major turning point followed: Limestone shut down its football program. While that was a painful and difficult situation for many people, it also allowed Garner to bring over several trusted coaches and a large group of players. That continuity proved valuable during a transition year, giving him familiar staff members and experienced athletes who helped strengthen the program quickly.

Throughout the conversation, Garner makes it clear that relationships matter. Whether he is talking about former players, current staff, or athletes looking for a new home, his focus stays consistent: do right by people.

A Program Focused on Opportunity

One of the strongest themes from the episode is player development.

Coach Garner does not shy away from talking about the realities of today’s college football landscape, including the transfer portal. He acknowledges both sides of it. The portal can help a team bring in talent, but it can also quickly thin out a roster. In fact, he shares that the program lost four quarterbacks through the portal, which forced the staff to rebuild depth at the position and created a four-man battle heading into spring.

Still, his outlook is refreshingly straightforward: if a player has the chance to move up and pursue a bigger opportunity, North Greenville wants to help make that happen.

That philosophy says a lot about the program.

At the Division II level, where players are grinding for development, exposure, and opportunity, that kind of support matters. Garner repeatedly emphasizes that North Greenville wants to give players the best possible experience on the field, in the classroom, and in life after football. Whether a player stays and thrives at NGU or uses the program as a springboard to another level, the mission stays the same—help them grow.

Spring Ball, Competition, and “Let’s Eat”

The episode also turns toward the present, with North Greenville in the middle of spring ball.

This year, the staff moved spring practices earlier in the calendar to create more time for physical development afterward. Garner explains that the goal is simple: get the work in now, then let the team spend a longer stretch in the weight room building stronger bodies for the grind of the season.

To raise the intensity, the program introduced a competitive spring challenge built around the phrase “Let’s Eat.”

Players have been split into 12 teams, each led by a captain, and they earn or lose points based on performance and accountability. Competitions happen at practice, but the scoreboard also reflects things like punctuality, class attendance, meetings, lifts, and treatment sessions. The top teams will earn rewards, including a trip to Hall’s Chop House and the chance to claim a trophy helmet and choose from uniform perks.

It is a smart way to reinforce the culture Coach Garner wants: competitive, accountable, and player-led.

Spotlighting North Greenville

The pilot is not only about football. It is also about visibility.

Jim Padgett shares how a simple direct message to Coach Garner about helping with social media turned into a growing role with the program. That same spirit of initiative helped spark the podcast itself.

Together, Garner and Padgett talk about wanting to bring more attention to North Greenville—not just football, but the entire university. They mention the success of other athletic programs, the beauty of campus, and the opportunity to showcase what makes NGU special.

That broader vision makes this podcast worth following. It is not just about scores and schedules. It is about culture, leadership, stories, and the people building something meaningful in Tigerville.

Just the Beginning

Episode One of The ALPHA Podcast feels like exactly what a pilot episode should be: a strong introduction, a clear identity, and a reason to come back for more.

Listeners get a better understanding of who Coach Nate Garner is, what ALPHA means, how the program is growing, and where North Greenville football hopes to go next. With future episodes expected to feature players, coaches, and voices from across campus, the podcast is shaping up to be a strong extension of the program’s mission.

At North Greenville, ALPHA is not just a name.

It is the standard.
